The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has suffered a significant defeat in the Male’ City Council election held yesterday.
Preliminary results by Elections Commission indicate that MDP was able to secure only the constituencies of Macchangoalhi Medhu, Maafannu Hulhangu Uthuru, Maafannu Hulhangu, Henveiru Uthuru, Galolhu Medhu and Galolhu Hulhangu. This is in addition to Galolhu Uthuru where MDP’s candidate Saif Fathih was automatically elected with no other competition. It is notable that this is the first time since the formation of the Male’ City Council that MDP has lost the majority in the council.
Some of the PPM candidates who won the seats in Male’ City Council are famous activists, who has notably criticized the government on social media platforms and on television. This includes Ahmed Nareesh, Ahmed Aifan and Nahula Ali.
MDP also suffered a major blow in the competition for the Mayor of Male’ City. PPM’s candidate and former Housing Minister Dr.Mohamed Muizzu won the election by a huge margin, making it the first time where a Mayor from MDP will not be heading the City Council.
MDP’s candidate Uz.Anas Abdul Sattar has accepted his defeat and congratulated Dr.Muizzu.
According to available statistics, the voter turnout from Male’ City was significantly low compared to other elections in the past. This could be linked with the current COVID-19 pandemic.
