Tourism minister Dr.Abdulla Mausoom has stated that there is hope for tourism arrivals to reach a figure of 1 Million tourists during next year.
Speaking at PSM’s Raajje Miadhu Program, Tourism minister Dr.Abdulla Mausoom stated that discussions regarding tourists arrival estimations is currently underway with the relevant parties. He said that current estimations show that 750,000 tourists would visit the island nation next year. However, Dr. Mausoom raised hope for a greater number of tourists, with arrivals estimated to be a million tourists next year.
Minister also highlighted that even 700,000 tourists arriving to Maldives would be considered a huge success, due to the current state of tourism industry worldwide.
After closing the borders in late March, Maldives re-opened its borders on July 15th, with the hopes of boosting its economy through the revenue generated by the tourism sector. The arrival numbers to the country are slowly increasing, yet many are still skeptical about how the decision to re-open the borders amidst the global pandemic would boost the economic recovery of the Maldives.
