Attack against President Nasheed: Police investigating the incident as a terrorist attack

Maldives Police Service has stated that they are investigating last night’s incident at Neelofaru Magu of Male’ City, as a targeted terrorist attack.

Speaker of the Parliament, President Mohamed Nasheed and four other people were injured last night in an explosion near the house of President Nasheed. Eyewitnesses say that the explosion took place just as he was about to get into the car. It is unclear that what caused this explosion, but a number of cycles were seen lying on the road.

President Nasheed and others were immediately rushed to the hospital for medical care. President Nasheed is currently admitted at ADK Hospital, having undergone multiple surgeries for the injuries he sustained as a result of this incident.

In a statement issued by Maldives Police Service this morning, they said that the incident is being investigated with utmost importance. Police said that they have employed all the resources available for this investigation, and is seeking the help of two experts of United Kingdom who are currently stationed in the Maldives on behalf of UNODC. Two experts of the Australian Federal Police are expected to arrive at the Maldives tomorrow, to assist with the investigation.

Police said that based on the preliminary findings, they are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack against Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. The security forces are currently undertaking special efforts to maintain the security of Male’ City, having increased their alert status.

Maldives Police Service has also created a special hotline through which individuals can give anonymous tips about the incident. Police has urged individuals with any information regarding the incident to contact them on the hotline 9704000. They assured that the identity of the people contacting the hotline would be kept confidential.
