Last Friday(May 21), BTS melted hearts around the world with the release of their new single “Butter”. The song has been highly anticipated by fans since the announcement of it back in April when their YouTube channel hosted the butter-melting countdown.
During its premiere, “Butter” drew more than 3.89 million concurrent viewers, breaking the previous record set by the band’s last summer’s hit "Dynamite”. During the first 24 hours, “Butter” broke numerous records, including those previously held by BTS themselves. It was the fastest music video to reach 100 million views, and totaled 112.8 million record-breaking views by the end of the 24 hours. The song also debuted at number one on Apple Music Maldives on Friday at 5 p.m. MVT and has remained there since.
The song which BTS’ vocalist Jimin described as “cute and maybe a little charismatic, but also kind”, features a funky dance beat and bright visuals. The lyrics, for which the band’s leader RM is credited for as well, include catchy lines such as “smooth as butter” and also an endearing shout-out to their fans with the rap line “got ARMY right behind us when we say so”.
While the song features colourful and vibrant visuals full of dancing and snappy clothes, fans are patiently waiting to see it be performed live. BTS is set to perform "Butter" for the first time on television at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, The band is nominated for four awards this year at the BBMAs, including their fifth nomination for the fan-voted category Top Social Artist. In addition, the sepet also won nominations for Top Duo/Group, Top Selling Artist and Top Selling Song for their previous single “Dynamite”. The show will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, May 24, at 5 a.m. MVT.
