The Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Thoyyib Mohamed has stated that the company actually had to increase its efforts in promoting the Maldives as a tourist destination, after the country decided to close its borders.
He revealed this last night while speaking at a Press Conference by NEOC regarding the re-start of tourism in the Maldives starting from July 15th after the borders had shut down amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the Press Conference, Thoyyib stated that MMPRC was undertaking many efforts to promote Maldives as a tourist destination, until the decision to temporarily close the borders was taken. However, he mentioned that this did not mean that the corporation had stopped its marketing and promotion efforts. MMPRC’s Managing Director Thoyyib revealed that after the borders had closed, the corporation actually had to increase its promotion efforts of the Maldives as a tourist destination.
He said that the main purpose of increasing the promotion efforts was to keep the good reputation of the country as a destination, while marketing it as an ideal destination to visit when the borders are re-opened. Thoyyib said that new marketing techniques such as online mediums had to be used for wider reach amid the pandemic.
Thoyyib said that MMPRC had participated in various webinars related to tourism within the past three months and conducted various other online events such as a Facebook Live. He stressed that it is possible to reach the new target of 850,000 arrivals this year, if proper marketing of the destination is done with the help of all stakeholders.
